Silica Assessments

in Occupational Hygiene

Respirable Crystalline Quartz Silica dust (Silica) is harmful when inhaled.

Crystalline silica is found in sand, stone, concrete and mortar. It is also used to make a variety of products including composite stone used to fabricate kitchen and bathroom benchtops, bricks, tiles and some plastics. When workers cut, crush, drill, polish, saw or grind products that contain silica, dust particles are generated that are small enough to be breathed in.

Exposure to Crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of lung cancer, silicosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The dust particle is 100 times smaller than a grain of sand and can be breathed in easily.

The national workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica has been halved from an eight hour time-weighted average airborne concentration of 0.1 milligrams per cubic metre (mg/m3) to 0.05 mg/m3.
